Our parishioner, Stephanie Arroyo, will be celebrating her Quinceanera on her 15th birthday. She has invited everyone to join her for this special celebration, which is an important part of her family's ethnic and Catholic tradition. Stephanie's Quinceanera will be celebrated in church on Saturday, July 28th, at 12:30 p.m. As part of her Quinceanera preparation, Stephanie was asked to write this article for you:
Quinceanera
This year I will be turning 15 years old. In my Hispanic culture, turning 15 is a great honor. When a girl turns 15 years old, it is called a quinceanera. A quinceanera is a tradition that emphasizes a girl's childhood to adulthood. A quinceanera is a time to celebrate life and give thanks to God for having reached this milestone. It is at this age that a quinceanera should also be able to handle more responsibilities and become more independent. Taking on more responsibilities could mean becoming more active in the church and the community. We should also become less dependent on our parents, by trying to make more mature decisions in our lives that will lead us to a good path in life.
The quinceanera ritual starts with a mass or blessing in the Catholic Church. In this mass, the quinceanera makes a commitment to god to live out her life according to the teachings of the Church.
A quinceanera can be accompanied by fifteen young men and women as part of the party. The celebration of the quinceanera could involve a small lunch or dinner. Some celebrations involve very elaborate parties with flowers, music and expensive dinners. I chose to just have a small luncheon instead of an elaborate party.
To me, and my parents, the most important part of turning 15 and becoming a quinceanera is to be able to be blessed by the church and reconfirm my beliefs and dedication to the Church.
This celebration, for me, will be a great honor and a great way to become closer to God.
