PARENTS ARE IMPORTANT TO RELIGIOUS VOCATIONS TODAY Why do some studies today show that parents are the top obstacle to religious vocations today? First of all, families are smaller. Parents want to have grandchildren and they want the family name to continue. And if they only have a few children they are less likely to encourage their children to consider a celibate vocation. It used to be when families were much larger, parents would encourage vocations to the priesthood and religious life more readily because they had other children that would provide grandchildren. I have had parents tell me that they do not want their children to be a priest, brother or sister. I always respond to by saying, "What do you want for your children?" They inevitably tell me, "I want my kids to be happy." My next question is, "How do your children find happiness - by doing your will or the will of God?" If God is calling your child to be a priest, sister or brother, God will give them the grace to live this life and to find great joy in it. My father asked me before entering the seminary, "Son, are you sure you can be happy as a priest?" I asked my Dad, "How did you know Mom was the right one for you?" He said, as most married people say, "I don't know, but when I met your Mother I knew she was the one." I said, "Dad, I feel the same way. I don't know why God is calling me and I don't know where He is leading me, but I feel this is what I was created to do." My Dad understood and has supported me ever since. Parents, please encourage your children to follow the will of God in their lives. Just as you encourage them to be teachers, doctors, etc., give them the option of following Jesus in a religious vocation. If they determine that God is calling them to be a priest, sister or brother, they are going to find true peace and joy in that vocation. Fr. Catholic Schools Week, the annual celebration of Catholic schools and their contribution to their communities and the nation, is set for Jan. 27 through Feb. 2, 2008. For more than three decades, the nation's Catholic schools have spent the last week of January recalling what makes Catholic education special. The 2008 theme is "Catholic Schools Light the Way," which highlights the mission of Catholic schools to provide a faith- based education that supports the whole child academically and spiritually and prepares students for future success. "With their emphasis on academic excellence and moral values, Catholic schools enjoy high satisfaction among students and parents and high achievement rates, including high school graduation rates of more than 99 percent," said Marie Powell, executive director of Catholic Education at the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. "This is a message we want to share with our nation's leaders." Catholic Schools Week is a joint project of the National Catholic Educational Association, the world's largest private, professional education association, and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, the national public policy organization of U.S. bishops. THANK YOU, MOLLY LINDBERG After more than four years of strong leadership of our Music Ministry, Molly Lindberg will be leaving us. We want to thank her for all of her hard work and her dedication. Molly completes her service as Music Director with the special concert planned for February 24. We hope that you will come to the concert and enjoy the performance and honor her for her giftedness and for all she has done for the parish. Following Molly's departure, Tim Barton, our regular accompanist, will serve as the Interim Music Director for the rest of this choir season and he will have assistants working with him with our children's choirs. We are beginning a national search process for our new Music Director. The search process will be led by parishioner Paul French, who is Music Director of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Chicago. Paul is a nationally known liturgical musician who has served on the Board of Directors for the American Federation Pueri Cantores, the official student choral organization of the Roman Catholic Church. If you are interested in being part of the committee working together with Paul, please contact the Parish Office.
