Women Doctors of the
Church
Last
Tuesday was the feast of Saint Catherine of Siena. You may know that my dog is named for
her. Some consider this irreverent but
actually, naming her was something done out of great reverence. If I could surround myself with holy men and women
who are saints in heaven, St. Catherine of Siena would be among them. She was a Catholic laywoman who helped to
change the history of the Church and she is another one of my heroes.
Catherine
was born in 1347 in Siena, Italy. She
was youngest of 25 children born to the Benincasa
family. At the age of 6 or 7 she had a
mystical experience which deeply affected her, leading her to want to devote
her life to God from a young age. I
would love to share the whole story of her life but could never fit it onto a
single page. Some of the most important
things about her life were these: As a laywoman, she was a Third Order
Dominican who spent three years in deep, prayerful seclusion before
undertaking active ministry. When she
went out into the world, she cared for the sick, attended to the needs of the
poor, and worked for the conversion of sinners.
She was a controversial figure who addressed public figures in the most
direct terms. She effectively persuaded
the Pope to return to Rome from exile in Avignon, France, appealing to him to
be “manly” and do what God wanted him to do.
She was given special graces by God that enabled her to have great
ecstatic, mystical experiences. She is
known to be one of the greatest theological thinkers in the Church, even though
she had no formal education. Catherine,
though herself illiterate, dictated her intimate conversations with God so that
a written record of them could be made.
These were later published as “The Dialogue,” a work which is known
today as one of the greatest spiritual writings of all time. St. Catherine of Siena lived only to the age
of 33. She was canonized in 1461 and she
was named a Doctor of the Church in 1970.
The
two pictures that appear on this page hang on the walls of my office. The first is actually a photograph that I
took in the holy city of Rome. This
statue of St. Catherine, who is patron saint of Italy, is very beautiful and
stands not far from St. Peter’s.
The
second picture is of a $3 poster I brought back from Rome and had framed. The original painting is in Siena but I
purchased the small replica I have at the church of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva in Rome.
The name of this church means “Mary over Minerva,” and it is a Catholic
Church built over the former site of an ancient temple dedicated to Minerva,
the goddess of wisdom. It is here that
the body of St. Catherine of Siena was laid to rest, as much of her ministry
took place in Rome.
I
especially like this painting because it gives me a kind of feminine image of
Christ. For me, this is important
because I think we should be able to recognize the presence of Jesus in women
and this image is very striking. Here,
Catherine is pictured with her stigmata, marks of the wounds of Jesus that were
received by some of the saints, including Catherine. She has her hand reaching out to another
figure in the painting, as if she is placing something in the mouth of another
person. The painting reminds me of
Christ feeding the people of God with Word and Sacrament. In this painting, I am also able to recognize
Jesus present and ministering to others through the life of St. Catherine of
Siena.
This
week, there will be an opportunity to learn more about Saint Catherine, as well
as the two other female saints of the church who have been named Doctors of the
Church – St. Teresa of Avila and St. Therese of Liseux. Join us for a presentation by Father David
Simpson, O.Carm. on “The
Women Doctors of the Church” on Tuesday evening in Barrett Hall. The program begins at 7:00 p.m.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
During a recent Q&A session with priests
in Rome, this is what our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI had to say about eucharistic adoration:
“Thanks be to God that after the Second Vatican Council, after a period
in which the sense of eucharistic adoration was
somewhat lacking, the joy of this adoration was reborn everywhere in the
Church, as we saw and heard at the Synod on the Eucharist.
We have now discovered that without adoration
as an act consequent to Communion received, this center that the Lord gave to
us – that is, the possibility of celebrating his sacrifice and this of entering
into a sacramental, almost corporeal, communion with him – loses its depth as
well as it human richness.”
All are invited to come and spend some time
with Our Lord during our next day of Eucharistic Adoration, Monday, May 5, 2008
from 9 AM to 7 PM. Spend time in quiet in memorized prayer, meditative prayer,
reading the scriptures, etc.. The day of adoration and
prayer closes with Benediction at 7:00 PM. You are invited to join us any time
during the day, as well as for Benediction. We are in need of people to sign up
for an hour of adoration, especially the 12 PM hour. Please see the large sign-up poster in the
back of church.

Rental and Use of Barrett Hall
and Social Hall
The renting and use of Barrett Hall and the Social Hall depends
upon the event. Barrett Hall is
available for things related to the sacraments or ministries of the
church. For example, in Barrett Hall we
have had multiple wedding receptions, gatherings after funerals and memorial
services, and retreats for religious groups.
We do not use Barrett Hall for individual celebrations when many
children together receive a sacrament for the first time, although we try to have group receptions there when possible, nor is
it used for private parties. The Social Hall (in the school building), as well as classrooms at
certain times, are available for rent for private parties or meetings of groups
or organizations from outside the parish. We will accommodate what requests we can, at
times when adequate staffing is available.
All facility rentals require an
application and approval. In addition,
there is the necessary purchase of insurance through the Diocese of Joliet.
For more information about the use
or rental of Barrett Hall for religious events, please contact the Pastoral
Life Coordinator, Mary Foley. For
information about the use or rental of the Social Hall or classrooms for a
private party or a meeting of an organization outside of the parish, please
contact the Parish Office Manager, Sr. Marlene Geimer. Both can be reached at the parish office at
(630) 279-5700.

Spring
has finally arrived and everyone is knee deep in baseball and gardening. We ask
that you please take a moment and send in your registration for the 2008-2009
RE year before summer begins. If you did not receive one or know someone who
needs one, call the RE office. We encourage everyone to return his or her forms
before the end of the school year to insure your choice of session time. Be
aware that our Kindergarten and Pre School RE space is limited, so register
early.
Please consider being a catechist.
Each
year we lose some of our catechists due to job changes or maybe changes in
ministry. This year is no different.
Currently it looks like we will need catechists and/or aides in
Kindergarten, Gr. 3, and Gr. 4 at Session 1, Gr. 2, 4, and possibly 6 at Session
2, and Gr. 5 and 7 at Session 3. If you think God is calling you to help at any
of those grade levels, please call the REO and we will talk more about it. Our
children depend on you to pass on our faith.
Thank
you to all who helped with our First Communion
and Confirmation Celebrations during April. All 5 of the First Communions and
our Confirmation celebration could not have taken place without the hard work
of all of our catechists, office helpers, ministers, and musicians. You know
who you are. You are much appreciated.
Thank
you also to all of our RE children, parents, grandparents, guardians, and of
course our staff of over 75 volunteer catechists, aides, hall monitors, and
office helpers for all that you have done over this past RE year. We have all
been blessed by your presence among us.

information, please call Mary Ann Woods at the REO, 832-8962.

PEACE AND JUSTICE COMMITTEE
Catholic
Perspectives on Immigration and Justice
Five principles governing the Church’s response to
public policy relating to immigration:
1. Persons have the right to find opportunities
in their homeland to work and support their families in dignity
and safety. In public policy terms, efforts should be made to address global
economic inequalities through just
trade practices, economic development, and debt relief. Peacemaking efforts
should be advanced to end conflicts which force persons to flee their homes.
2. Persons have the right to migrate to support
themselves and their families when there are just reasons for it. While not
absolute, this right applies when migrants are forced by rampant poverty or
political unrest to leave their homes out of necessity and seek only to survive
and support their families.
3. Sovereign nations have a right to control
their borders in the service of the common good of their
citizens. However, this right also is not absolute. Powerful economic nations
have an obligation to the universal common good and should seek to accommodate
migration to the greatest extent possible. Where labor demands attract foreign
workers, an immigration policy is required that will enable persons to enter
the nation legally, safely and in a dignified manner to obtain jobs and reunite
with family members.
4. Refugees and asylum seekers should be
afforded protection when forced by political unrest to leave
their homes for fear of death or harm.
5. The human rights and the human dignity of
undocumented migrants should be respected, whether they have
entered the nation without proper authorization or have over-stayed their
visas. Such persons should not be detained in deplorable conditions, shackled, or
abused in any manner. They should not be blamed for the social ills of a
nation.
Prepared
by Mary Ann Reed for the Peace and Justice Committee and based on information
obtained from justiceforimmigrants.org, the Catholic Campaign for
Immigration Reform or the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Gospel Reflection
Jesus raised his eyes to heaven and said, "Father, the hour
has come. Give glory to your son, so that your son may glorify you, just as you
gave him authority over all people, so that your son may give eternal life to
all you gave him. Now this is eternal life,
that they should know you, the only true God,
and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ."
