The Solemnity of the
Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

RECEIVING COMMUNION
Darren M. Henson,
STL
As a small faith-sharing group reflected on Sunday liturgy, a question arose. How could they enrich receiving the Eucharist? Sometimes Holy Communion is moving or comforting. Other times it seems ordinary. While the Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life, even the most faithful Catholics experience periods when Communion does little to rouse the soul. Getting more out of Communion entails inner spiritual work and engaging the Catholic imagination.
The document Happy Are Those Who Are Called to His Supper, prepared by the USCCB in November 2006, concerns reception of Holy Communion. The document stresses a double eucharistic unity: communion with the Risen Christ and with all believers. At Mass, we join our lives to Christ and participate in his saving sacrifice. As we receive his body and blood, we encounter the very presence of the Risen One. At the same time, Communion forges unity with one another. The bishops write, "While we each personally receive Holy Communion, it is not a private devotion. Rather, the reception of Holy Communion is an integral part of our worship as a community of faith.” Because we share communion with Christ we come into union with one another.
Growing in an awareness of these mysteries of unity with Christ and one another takes preparation. Consider preparing throughout the week. This can be assisted through daily prayer, self-reflection, examinations of conscience, and healthy sacramental practices.
Preparation during the liturgy itself is important. Actively listen to the Word of God and to the eucharistic prayer. Savoring the imagery in the Agnus Dei prepares us for receiving Communion.
Eucharistic hymnody is intended for all to sing. It is not background music. The text make connections between receiving Eucharist and what it is doing for us.
All of this leads up to the actual reception. As one body we process to the altar. We reverence the sacrament with a humble bow of the head. Our personal prayers of love and thanksgiving follow when all have received and sit in silence.
Pope Benedict XVI has explained, "Union with Christ is also union with all those to whom he gives himself.... Communion draws me out of myself towards him, and thus also towards unity with all Christians" (Deus Caritas Est, 14). Preparing to be united with Christ and one another will help us in our identity as the body of Christ.
QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION
What does it mean to be in communion with the Risen Christ?
For what do I hunger? Do I believe the Eucharist will feed that need?
HOME ACTIVITES
Pray before all meals with the sense that all on the table are God's gifts.
Dining expresses intimacy. When sharing a meal with others, even those in your family, know that invisible bonds of love are connecting you.

ST. VINCENT DEPAUL CLOTHING
DRIVE
The Mary Queen of Heaven St. Vincent de Paul Society is sponsoring a clothing drive to benefit the needy the weekend of May 31st and June 1st.
Now is as good a time as ever to clean your dressers, closets and cabinets. Clear out all those items that you no longer need. Perhaps your children have outgrown some of their clothing again. Pass on those barely worn items so that children from low-income families may present themselves with pride and dignity. We are in need of clean, gently used clothing, jackets, shoes and accessories for the spring and summer months.
Also, needed are small household items: dishes, glassware, cookware, small clean working appliances, knick-knacks, lamps, lines, toys, books, jewelry, etc.
The St. Vincent de Paul Truck will be in the parking lot beginning at 9:00 a.m. on May 31st and will be leaving around 1:00 p.m. on June 1st. Drop off your things on Saturday or bring them when you come to Mass on Sunday. Receipts are always gladly given!
For
donations of furniture and other large items, please call 630-231-4658 to
schedule the truck.
Once
again we want to thank you for your past donations and for your extreme
generosity when it comes to helping those less fortunate.

Education Commission
This weekend marks the official start of the summer season. If you want to register at the discounted fee, get your registration forms in to the office before June 1st. FYI – preschool and Kindergarten classes always fill up quickly and enrollment is limited at those grade levels. Don’t get left out. Register for 08/09 RE year before summer vacation begins.
We are blessed in the RE program by the generous outpouring of time and talent by the many, many people who volunteer to help as a catechist, aide, office helper, etc. We are also most grateful. However, as always we are still in need of catechists at various grade levels at various session times. Right now it looks like our greatest needs are in the 3:15 session. We need an aide at the preschool level, 2 catechists and an aide in Kindergarten, 4 catechists in Gr. 3, and 2 in Gr. 4. We also need help in Grs. 2 & 6 at 5:15 and Grs. 6 & 7 at 7:00PM. If you are a loving, welcoming, accepting, forgiving person of faith, you have the most important qualifications for being a catechist. You don’t have to be a theologian, just someone who can help our children understand how the Gospel can be applied to their lives. Come share your Faith with the over 500 young people of our RE program. Call for more info. Our children depend on you to pass on our faith.
If you have any questions or need more information, please call
Mary Ann Woods at the REO, 832-8962.

How Can I Help?”
Cyclone Nargis struck Myanmar (Burma) on Saturday, May 3, bringing a deadly tidal surge across the low-lying coastal areas of the country. The storm hit the Irrawaddy Delta region, an area populated by 24 million people. Nargis toppled infrastructure in Myanmar’s largest city, Yangon (Rangoon), and destroyed tens of thousands of homes. Communications lines were down in the first few days, but more news is coming from the region on the magnitude of the cyclone’s destruction.
“Cyclone Nargis could not have happened in a worse stretch of land. The surge hit in the low lying coastal areas. With the tidal surge at 12 to 15 feet, presumably thousands of people living along the Delta were simply washed away,” says Pat Johns, director, CRS emergency response team.
The latest reports of some 100,000 dead and 1 million homeless demonstrate dire conditions in which basic food, shelter and water are urgently needed.
CRS Response:
CRS is supporting the emergency relief and response efforts of the Caritas Internationalis network in the worst affected areas. Assessments on the level of devastation are still underway as communications remain difficult and news trickles out of the country.
Significant support is critical to ensure life-saving assistance reaches the most vulnerable people quickly. It is anticipated that food, shelter and water will be of urgent need. The Caritas network will coordinate with local and international agencies to determine how best to provide help where it is most needed.

The Diocese of Joliet Catholic Cemeteries announces the construction of a new columbarium located in St. Mary Cemetery in Elmhurst. A columbarium is a structure containing niches for the inurnment of cremated remains. This will be the first phase of several columbaria planned for St. Mary Cemetery. The new columbarium is constructed of solid granite and contains 12 companion niches (for 2 urns) and 24 single niches (for 1 urn).
The Catholic Church prefers the burial of the deceased in consecrated ground. However, for a variety of reasons, some people may prefer to have the body of the deceased cremated before it is buried. This is permissible, as long as there is no intentional denial of the belief in the final Resurrection of the body.
The burial or inurnment in a catholic cemetery, mausoleum or columbarium should occur as soon as possible after the Funeral Mass. The cremated remains of the body should not be kept in the family home. Cremated remains are to be placed in a worthy vessel and given the same respect as the body they were and therefore the church does not permit the cremated remains of the body to be separated or scattered.
For information regarding selection and pricing, you are kindly asked to contact the Catholic Cemetery Family Service Office @ Assumption Catholic Cemetery in Wheaton, phone (630) 668-3313 and ask for Mary Panagakos (Family Service Counselor).

Gospel Verse
Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will live forever.
